YMCA Partners in New Riverwood Facility
Construction has commenced on the Riverwood Indoor Sports and Fitness Centre.
Explaining the project City of Canterbury Mayor, Councilor Robert Furolo commented that "following a thorough and extensive tender process, Council recently made a decision and awarded the tender for construction of the Centre.
"Work has recently starting on the $9 million facility, which is one of the biggest investments in a new community building by Council.
"The Centre will be an ultra modern facility and will cater for a variety of indoor sports, including netball, basketball, soccer and volleyball as well as incorporate a gym, change rooms, cafeteria and childcare services.
"This new facility is part of the City of Canterburyâs ongoing commitment to improving the quality and range of community infrastructure.
"This major investment comes on top of the recently completed $2.1 million Punchbowl Community Centre which is already proving to be very popular with residents.
"Following construction and commissioning of the facility, the YMCA will then operate the Centre under a lease agreement from Council."
YMCA Sydney Chief Executive, Phillip Hare said the YMCA believes the new Riverwood Indoor Sports and Fitness Centre will be one of the "community hearts for residents of the City of Canterbury".
Hare commented "at the heart of all healthy communities is a place where people young and old, individuals and families of all cultures and backgrounds can meet, socialise and participate in healthy, positive community and family building activities.
"The Centre will be more than just a high quality fitness and sports centre, the facility will offer programs and activities for all residents to grow in Mind, Body and Spirit."
Buildcorp Contracting NSW Pty Ltd has been selected to undertake construction of the Centre and have recently carried out similar work on Pittwater Sports Centre, Kings School Sports Centre and Bathurst Aquatic Centre.
Council received a $4.5 million grant from the NSW Department of Housing to assist in the construction of the indoor sports centre.
Construction will take 38 weeks to complete dependant on weather conditions.
