YMCA and Precor partner in exclusive equipment deal

YMCA and Precor partner in exclusive equipment deal
February 16, 2017

YMCA Victoria and leading fitness supplier Precor® have announced a new, exclusive equipment procurement contract based on a shared vision of helping improve the health, wellness and happiness of YMCA gym members.

The partnership is the result of recommendations from a strategic resourcing project led by YMCA Victoria Health and Wellness Manager Troy Walker, initiated in response to the expiry of an existing supplier agreement in 2016.

Walker said that one of the key aims of the project was to harness the YMCA’s reach and experience to strengthen its reputation as a health and wellness leader.

Walker explained “the YMCA is the largest provider of community health, wellness and recreation management in Victoria and the new partnership with Precor will help us grow and improve our industry position further.

“The Y has been serving the Victorian community for over 160 years and we have 50,000 members and more than 6,000 employees at present. We run 34 gyms in leisure facilities across the state and have a whole community focus that sits perfectly with Precor’s organisational values.”

The project initiated an evaluation committee that determined the best equipment model moving forward, taking into consideration the YMCA Recreation Sector plan and needs, both in the present environment and looking towards the future.

Invitations to present were issued to five of the industry’s leading equipment suppliers with each measured and scored against a detailed set of criteria. After a thorough assessment process, Precor clearly emerged as the superior option.

A worldwide leader in developing fitness equipment, Precor has a strong focus on technology and is backed by professional after-sales service, which were key considerations.

The YMCA has entered in to a preferred supplier agreement with Precor for an initial term of two years with an option of a third year based on performance.

Walker said that a key consideration when agreeing to such a major strategic change was the protection and growth of the YMCA’s reputation.

He added “Precor’s commitment to extensive investment in product development to remain at the forefront of the industry, will provide a major benefit and assist develop the YMCA brand as proactive, innovative and progressive.

“This has already happened in the United States where Precor is YMCA USA’s preferred supplier.”

Precor Australia’s Sales Manager, Paul Kelly, said that, “as one of the world’s largest fitness equipment manufacturers and suppliers, Precor has helped shape the fitness industry and lead the global market with product development and innovation for over three decades”.

“We’re committed to developing personalised health and fitness experiences that help people make meaningful change to their lives through the benefits of physical activity,” said Mr Kelly.

“We believe that YMCA Victoria’s 160 year heritage of community development ties in perfectly with Precor’s 35-year history in the fitness industry. This new partnership is exciting for both organisations we believe will realise huge benefits.”

The partnership with Precor officially started last month and will be implemented across YMCA managed facilities on individual timelines as agreements come up for renewal.

This will mean that the new partnership may not have immediate effect across all YMCA Victoria sites, which has been raised with all stakeholders and will not affect the new agreement.

Walker said the organisations would work to identify and understand industry challenges and proactively provide solutions to improve all YMCA-managed facilities.

Walker concluded “we believe that this new partnership will result in improved and more dynamic relationships and facilitate better engagement with key stakeholders to ensure strong organisational outcomes for all.”
