Woodland Walk attraction opens in Western Sydney
Visitors are now able to see, touch, smell and learn about one of Australia’s most rare natural habitats with an immersive new ‘Woodland Walk’ experience launched at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan this week.
John Siemon, Curator of the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan, explains “the Cumberland Plain Woodland is critically endangered, with less than 10% of the dense eucalypt scrub remaining.
“It used to cover an area of 125,000 hectares of Western Sydney and today the remaining 11,000 hectares is a unique ecosystem supporting around 150 wildlife and plant species.
“Not only are the trees endangered, but many of the inhabitants they support are also endangered - birds like the Swift Parrot (and) invertebrates like the famous Cumberland Plain Land Snail to name a few.”
“This new Woodland Walk affords us an exciting opportunity to protect and showcase this treasure - a rare, naturally occurring ecological community that we are so lucky to have at the Australian Botanic Garden.”
The ‘Woodland Walk’ is a free, 4 kilometre self-guided trail through the naturally occurring Cumberland Plain Woodland at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan. The Walk also takes you past the Australian PlantBank - one of Australia’s most important plant science facilities.
Unique native plant and animal species to spot on the Woodland Walk include: narrow-leaved Ironbark (Eucalyptus crebra); Spiked Riceflower (Pimelea spicata); superb Fairy-wren (Malurus cyaneus); the Cumberland Plain Land Snail (Meridolum corneovirens); Lichen (Heterodea muelleri); the Swamp Wallaby (Wallabia bicolor) and the Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides)
Visitors can collect brochures for the walk from the Visitor Centre at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan.
