Western Australian Premier opens gates to Perth’s new Optus Stadium
Tens of thousands of people have been part of the opening of Perth’s new $1.6 billion Optus Stadium, with Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan calling for the venue to host future AFL Grand Finals.
Opening the 60,000 seat venue yesterday morning, the third-largest sporting stadium in Australia by capacity,
Premier McGowan suggested that Western Australia should host “the AFL Grand Final to our state each and every year, for nothing” in acknowledgement for the claimed high levels of GST that Western Australia remits to the Federal Government.
The opening ceremony saw Premier McGowan, Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray and former Premier Colin Barnett open the gates to the public for the first time alongside juniors representing a range of sports.
About 15,000 fans streamed into the venue for the opening session, with seven more one-hour tours provided during the day for more than 110,000 ticketholders to attend.
Attendees had the opportunity to roam the venue’s general admission areas, try its different food and beverage offerings, sit in the seats for the first time, and experience the stadium's state-of-the-art lighting, video and audio systems.
In the surrounding Stadium Park, children were able to play on the six nature playgrounds located in the Chevron Parkland for the first time – the playgrounds catering for a range of ages.
Commenting on the project, Premier McGowan acknowledged the role of former Premier Barnett, who was Premier during most of the design and construction phase of the project, stating "at the outset I want to thank Colin for all his work and perseverance," he said.
He went on to advise “the people of Western Australia have been watching the development of this venue for a number of years and it is now theirs to experience and enjoy.
"Optus Stadium is a world-class facility that generations of Western Australians will enjoy in coming years.”
Stadium Project Director Ronnie Hurst told the ABC the venue was designed to offer the best live experience it could, to compete with high-definition flat screen TVs and the comforts of home.
Hurst advised “that way, people will get out of the comfort of their living room with the flatscreen television, surround sound and fridge right beside them, to actually enjoy the live sport experience.
"That was the main thrust of everything we're about in terms of the design of the stadium."
Amid concerns over access to the venue in advance of all its transport options being completed, Western Australian Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the number of people using Transperth services was more than authorities anticipated with up to 90% of people attending yesterday’s event using public transport.
