Western Australia looks to develop trail town tourism
July 13, 2018

Western Australia's potential to create jobs and revitalise regional economies by developing specialised trail towns has been explored at a recent forum held in the south western town of Collie.

Key decision makers from government, the not-for-profit sector and businesses came together to guide Western Australia's trail towns strategy and capitalise on the growing trails industry to boost regional tourism and create jobs.

Trail towns are population centres connected to circular trail networks that allow visitors to pass through unique natural landscapes before returning to town, helping to secure more trade for local hotels, bars, restaurants and other small businesses.

Around the world, trail towns have been successful in revitalising regional towns, creating jobs, and boosting local tourism.

The forum considered potential locations for Western Australian trail towns, including Collie and Dwellingup, and feature demonstrations on successful trail town case studies from Australia and the world.

The forum is part of the ongoing work set out in the Western Australian Strategic Trails Blueprint 2017-2021.

Commenting on the forum, Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray stated "trail towns have seen terrific success around the world in boosting regional economies, with the concept proven to create local jobs and boost struggling country towns.

"By designing circular trail routes that begin and end in a population centre, tourists are encouraged to base themselves in town, spending money at local hotels, pubs, restaurants and other small businesses.

"There are some terrific success stories, with some struggling mining and timber towns seeing significant tourism benefits by building trail networks through their unique natural landscapes.

"There is huge potential in Western Australia to capitalise on the growing trails tourism market and today's forum will help guide future action on our trail networks."
