Adelaide's AAMI Stadium is set to be demolished and replaced with a community football field surrounded by a mix of parkland and residential and retail buildings.

With the AFL games to move from AAMI Stadium to the redeveloped Adelaide Oval in 2014, many in South Australia had assumed AAMI Stadium would be converted into a 25,000-seat venue and continue to host SANFL games.

However, in plans released this week the SANFL have revealed a 25-year masterplan for the stadium precinct in West Lakes. The plan suggests that AAMI Stadium will host its last SANFL match in 2020 and will then be demolished , with the West Lakes precinct converted into a mix of residential and retail developments spread across green spaces.

An AFL field (with no grandstands but surrounded by apartment blocks) - will remain for community use and as a training base for the Adelaide Crows.

Crows Chief Executive Steven Trigg told Adelaide newspaper The Advertiser that the Crows would remain at West Lakes for the "foreseeable" future but did not rule out a future move to a base closer to the city.

The Advertiser reported that many in the community had expected that AAMI Stadium would be reworked into a 25,000-seat boutique arena after 2014.

The SANFL's 25-year masterplan for the AAMI Stadium precinct will be open for public consultation as of next month. The league will seek the rezoning of the precinct by the South Australian Department of Urban Planning and Development by December.

If this is approved, the first stage of the redevelopment would begin in 2013.

The masterplan includes:

• Up to 1800 new dwellings including apartments, town houses, aged-care facilities, luxury and affordable housing.
• AAMI Stadium's field to be retained as a suburban oval and a large part of Max Basheer Reserve remodelled as a park.
• AAMI Stadium to be demolished to allow for residential town houses and buildings of three-to-six storeys. Taller buildings will be planned, according to zoning laws written for the precinct.
• Retail zones for small-scale shops and community services.

SANFL President John Olsen revealed the money raised from the sale and redevelopment of AAMI Stadium would be locked in a "future fund" for Australian rules football in South Australia.
