The Swim Instructors' Association (SIA) has this week advised that it has received confirmation that teachers at YMCA aquatic centres in Victoria will have their weekend penalties paid from the middle of October.

Over recent months SIA members and representatives have met with YMCA Victoria management to express their concern that the minimum rates that swim teachers are supposed to receive for weekend work were not being paid and had been removed with the introduction of the YMCA Staff Enterprise Agreement.

The SIA wrote to management seeking that this be corrected and set a deadline of last Friday.

As a result, a statement on the SIA Facebook page advises “we are pleased to announce that the YMCA has agreed, in good faith, to pay these weekend penalties from the middle of next month, seeking some time to implement the new rates.

“This result only came about because SIA members joined, fought and worked hard to ensure that teachers get a fairer deal at work.”

The SIA advise that these new rates will mean that permanent (including permanent part time) staff will receive 125% for Saturdays and 150% for Sunday with casual staff receiving 130% for both days.
