Virtual group fitness meets Macquarie University Sport’s member demands

Virtual group fitness meets Macquarie University Sport’s member demands
May 17, 2018

Macquarie University Sport has shared its experience of having become the first university in Australia to offer virtual group fitness to its users.

Based on the campus of Macquarie University in Sydney’s North-Western suburbs, the Macquarie University Sport and Aquatic Centre is has approximately 8,500 members and welcomes over million visitations per year.

In early 2017, the facility’s decided to diversify its health and fitness offerings, creating a business case for virtual group fitness.

By the second half of 2017, the virtual group fitness studio was approved, installed and began offering over 250 classes per week through both a group fitness timetable and the opportunity for members to book their own classes via Fitness on Demand.

The change was made to not only diversify Macquarie University Sport’s group fitness offering and offer great flexibility to members and users, but as a point of differentiation to other facilities within the area.

Explaining the change, Matt Grant, Fitness Services Manager at Macquarie University Sport, advises "like any facility we collect plenty of feedback and with many of our members students and staff of the university, they’ve provided the feedback that ‘fitting exercise into their busy university schedules is quite difficult so we were really looking provide exercise solution that would suit our members (and virtual group fitness was that solution).

“When looking for a virtual solution we went through an extensive process to really identify who were the leaders in the market for the virtual offering (and) Fitness On Demand for us was a no-brainer. Their support and advice through the whole process was second-to-none.

“The solution that we have is really eye-popping and that’s really important for us, especially with our clientele being university students. They’re really up to scratch with technology, and they know what looks good, so we really wanted a high-definition experience for them, and one that they couldn’t forget.

“We understand that it’s important to keep an eye on the future and keep ahead of the curve, and we see virtual group fitness as a step in that direction. We see ourselves as early-adopters and virtual group fitness as the future, so it was really important for us as a business to move in that direction, especially with the clientele that we have.”

Julia Powl, Macquarie University Sport’s Group Fitness Team Leader, adds “the value our members see in Virtual Group Fitness is the flexibility it provides them - flexibility to choose what sessions they want to do, when they want to do them.

“Being based on a university campus our membership base has a split of students and community members, many of who have expressed a desire for Group Fitness offerings in the early-mid morning time slot - virtual group fitness provides them this option.

“At Macquarie University Sport we offer Les Mills programs. They’re the classes that our members enjoy attending the most and they’re the classes that have the highest attendance rating in our virtual offering. People trust the quality of the programs in the offering, as well as the flexibility to book and choose their own classes outside of the virtual timetable – it’s been a win-win for our group fitness offering overall (as) since translating these offerings into our virtual group fitness timetable, we’ve seen a boost in attendance.”

Explaining the growth of virtual group fitness, Fitness on Demand National Account Manager, Dale Lindsay concludes “Fitness on Demand is the leading developer of virtual group fitness products. We have approximately 3,500 connected devices out in the field today.

“Fitness on Demand customise solutions - we help provide over 1,500 classes from 40 different content providers to help deliver virtual group fitness classes.

“One of the benefits we have of having a global marriage with LG is that we can provide our customers with a turnkey solution - that gives them global pricing for the larger format TVs or video walls, and that enables them to have delivery and installation, but particularly helps them to deliver that high definition Fitness on Demand content through the LG display technology.”
