Victorian Life Saving Clubs Go Solar

Victorian Life Saving Clubs Go Solar
June 24, 2016

Life Saving Clubs across Victoria are shifting towards renewable energy ahead of the coming summer with the announcement of grants for 42 Clubs to install 5 kilowatt solar panel systems to generate their own renewable power.

The $500,000 Community Renewables Solar Grants Initiative, launched in January this year, helps Victorian communities move towards clean energy and is one of a number of initiatives operating under the Victorian Government’s Renewable Energy Roadmap.

Frankston LSC, the first club to receive a grant under the initiative, saw a 5 kilowatt solar panel system installed on their life saving club in April this year, and have since been enjoying the benefits of lower energy costs.

Electricity represents a major operating cost to all clubs and solar panels have allowed Frankston LSC to spend more on critical life saving activities.

As a result of the Grants Initiative more than 800 solar panels will be installed over the coming weeks, equating to more than 200 kilowatts of clean energy across its clubs.

Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio suggested that this renewable energy initiative will transform the way community life saving clubs light and power their operations helping keep bills down while cutting greenhouse emissions.

Minister D’Ambrosio stated “we have already seen that these grants make a real difference for life saving clubs and ensure they can spend money where it’s needed most.”

“Our life saving clubs will not only benefit from lower energy costs but also reduce their greenhouse gas emissions each year.”

“Local communities are at the very forefront of this Initiative and will play a vital role ensuring renewable energy is an affordable option.”

Across Victoria, 12 Clean Energy Council approved solar retailers have competed for the installation grant, supporting local jobs in the renewable industry and helping clubs invest in sustainable technology.

This initiative aims to accelerate the development of renewable energy civic projects in Victoria and helps to reduce the costs associated with addressing issues such as climate change.
