Upgrades completed for Freds Pass Sport and Recreation Reserve following funding boost

Upgrades completed for Freds Pass Sport and Recreation Reserve following funding boost
May 22, 2020

The Northern Territory Government’s $2 million investment into the popular rural venue, Freds Pass Sport and Recreation Reserve, has seen the completion of new cricket club change rooms, viewing platform and a new maintenance shed.

The Government has delivered the upgrades in partnership with Litchfield Council to ensure the funding supported community priorities and aligned to the Freds Pass Sport and Recreation Reserve Board’s Master Plan.

Freds Pass Reserve is the regional hub for residents from Palmerston to Darwin River and is situated adjacent to the Stuart Highway, 35km south of Darwin. Freds Pass Reserve is owned by the Litchfield Council and is leased to Freds Pass Sport and Recreation Management Board Inc.

The Reserve is home to the numerous clubs and organisations that use the facilities regularly. It is also used by other casual users and the general public. About 4,000 people use Freds Pass Reserve every week. In addition, annual events such as the Freds Pass Rural Show, Freds Pass User Groups’ Home Games, NT Bushfire Council, Volunteer Firefighter’s Firies Games, along with many smaller community and sporting events are staged at the Reserve.

Darwin based C and R Constructions built the new cricket club change rooms and viewing platform, alongside JMT Builders who constructed the new maintenance shed.

Other works include the certification of various buildings, upgrades to the equestrian facilities, improvements to the road networks and a sealed carpark area for soccer and rugby union.

The tender for the road network upgrades has been awarded to Darwin owned construction company, Mugavin.

The Territory Government has also delivered a further $3 million of upgrades to the Reserve completed in October 2019.

Northern Territory Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture, Lauren Moss notes “Investing in the Territory’s community assets is important as ever during this difficult time, because we know they build vibrant communities, boost the economy and create local jobs.

“As we lift our COVID-19 restrictions, the upgrades to Freds Pass Reserve are essential as we transition back as a community into our favourite sporting and recreational activities.

Northern Territoy Assistant Minister for Sport, Tony Sievers adds “Freds Pass is a significant community asset – the sporting and recreational hub of the rural area and a favourite for locals. We are pleased to have delivered these timely and necessary facility upgrades.

“Territorians can get back to enjoying the Territory lifestyle, and the upgrades at Freds Pass will ensure we continue to provide quality experiences for the local community.”
