True Blue (and Pink) Surface for London 2012 Olympic Hockey
The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has announced that, for the first time ever at an Olympic Games, the Hockey competition will be contested on blue Poligras Olympia pitches, manufactured by Melbourne-based Advanced Polymer Technology Australasia and designed, installed and maintained by its partner Sports Technology International (STI).
The innovative decision to move away from the standard green pitch colour will provide high levels of contrast with the white ball and lines for players, officials, spectators, photographers and broadcasters. The pitches at the London Olympic Park Hockey Centre (LOPHC) will also feature pink run-off areas, creating a striking and unique look.
The Populous-designed Hockey Centre is the only full outdoor venue at the London Olympic Park so the two pitches are likely to be a prominent landmark to complement the architecture of the permanent surrounding venues.
Poligras has been progressive with new colour combination introductions for many years, having introduced a colour other than green with a rust terracotta surround at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
STI is proud to announce its successful bid to supply and full-construct the London 2012 Olympic hockey pitches.
STI designed a mitred corner effect for the 2008 Beijing Olympics using Beijing Red and Gold, colours developed specially for the Beijing Games. Sydney Olympic Park was host to the 2010 FIH Woman's Champion's trophy with the new POLIGRAS OLYMPIA pitch reflecting the home country's colours with green pitch and gold surrounds.
Advanced Polymer Technology Australasia Managing Director Dr Martin Schlegel stated that "Poligras is the paradigm for the future of the sport by combining vibrant new colour schemes, environmentally responsible technology and exacting playability characteristics demanded by elite hockey athletes."
STI Managing Director Stephen Niven added "with the blue pitch surface for the London 2012 Olympics, STI design options provide world hockey with the opportunity of pushing the boundaries.
"STI is proud to be part of this exciting enhancement in world hockey. Not since the introduction of synthetic hockey surfaces has there been such a brilliant development. It has been an absolute pleasure working with such progressive and creative people on the LOCOG and FIH teams."
The two training pitches at the Old Loughtonians Hockey Club in Essex - a Games-Time Training Venue - will mirror the pitches at the Hockey Centre, using the same blue and pink colour combination.
Over 600,000 spectators will be cheering on as the world's top Hockey players battle it out on STI's pitches at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Explaining the move to coloured pitches, Debbie Jevans, LOCOG Director of Sport, stated "as we look to be innovative as well as providing first class facilities, we are pleased to be working with the International Hockey Federation and installing blue hockey pitches in 2012. We have carried out research with athletes and broadcasters and are looking forward to world-class hockey being played at a bespoke venue on a blue pitch. The colour blue will define Hockey in 2012."
International Hockey Federation (FIH) Chief Executive Kelly Fairweather commented that "the playing performance and quality of a pitch are our primary concern and we're happy that LOCOG has researched this thoroughly. In addition though, we're keen to innovate in the presentation of hockey to ensure, among other things, that spectators either in the stadium or on television get a good view of the exciting field action. The pitch will blend very well with the look of the London 2012 Games as well as enhancing the visual impact of hockey at the Games."
