Trails blueprint paves way to revitalise regional towns

Trails blueprint paves way to revitalise regional towns
May 22, 2017

Development and increasing use of co-ordinated network of trail networks is set to boost job creation and economic development in regional Western Australia.

A newly released plan for trails development in the State highlights opportunities to create trail towns and trail networks, generating new tourism opportunities for regional economies as well as the metropolitan area.

The Western Australian Strategic Trails Blueprint 2017-2021 outlines new opportunities for cycling, mountain biking, horse riding, snorkeling and canoeing trails across Western Australia, offering challenging and unique experiences for domestic and international tourists.

Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray launched the plan when opening the 2017 Trails Industry Forum last week.

Minister Murray commented "WA has some of the world's most stunning natural landscapes and we need to open those up for Western Australians and tourists.

"Certain smaller towns in WA are facing difficulties with declining economic activity in traditional industries so we need to focus on new, under-utilised opportunities such as tourism.

"The (Western Australian) Government is committed to creating jobs and boosting our smaller country towns - and this blueprint provides the roadmap to make that happen.

"It could be mountain biking in the Peel region, horse riding in the South-West or paddling in the Great Southern - the opportunities are endless.

"There is also the potential for urban walk trails in the metropolitan area, snorkelling routes around Rottnest or 4WD adventure trails throughout the State."
