Tourism shown to be Asia’s largest employer

Tourism shown to be Asia’s largest employer
February 10, 2014

New research from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) shows that the tourism industry employs more people than any other sector in Asia.

The WTTC research shows that tourism directly employs 65 million people across Asia - more than those employed in financial services, communication services, banking, mining, higher education, chemicals manufacturing and automotive manufacturing.

WTTC President and Chief Executive David Scowsill says the figures underline the need for Governments to prioritise the industry, explaining "the research clearly indicates the vast economic and social relevance of the travel and tourism industry in Asia as well as its potential over the next decade.

"Travel and tourism is responsible for one in 12 jobs in Asia and employs more people than any other sector."

Scowsill is urging Governments to adopt a series of measures to promote the industry, adding "the way forward for growth and prosperity is to implement smarter visa and border security policies, avoid or abolish tourist taxes and attract and develop a skilled workforce to support the growing demand. The sector has an exciting future - Governments need to make sure they make the most of the opportunity."

The new study shows the number of people directly employed in the following major industries:

1. Travel & Tourism - 65.2 million jobs

2. Financial Services 65 million jobs

3. Education - 64.7 million jobs

4. Communication services 34 million jobs

5. Banking - 32.5 million jobs

6. Mining 16 million jobs

7. Chemicals Manufacturing 13 million jobs

8. Automotive Manufacturing - 12.6 million jobs

9. Higher education 8 million jobs
