Tourism Excellence Rewarded at Queensland Awards

Tourism Excellence Rewarded at Queensland Awards
November 23, 2010

The 2010 Queensland Tourism Awards have recognised far north Queensland tourism champion Charles Woodward and the Australian Outback Spectacular 2 Heroes of the Light Horse show.

In an event at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, Cairns local Charles Woodward was handed the Marie Watson Blake Award for extraordinary personal and professional achievements and contribution by an individual over many years to the Australian, and particularly the Queensland, tourism industry.

Presenting the award, Queensland Tourism Industry Council Chief Executive Daniel Gschwind said Woodward's commitment over more than three decades could not be ignored, stating "Charles saw the huge potential for tourism in Cairns from as early as the mid 1970s, when he first entered the industry, and has since been a driving force behind tourism in the region."

Village Roadshow Theme Parksâ $30 million show extravaganza Australian Outback Spectacular 2 Heroes of the Light Horse was awarded the prestigious Major Tourist Attraction Award (Category One).

The unique and exciting evening dinner show filled with outback music, drama and action was originally launched in April 2006, with Australian Outback Spectacular 2 Heroes of the Light Horse launching in September 2009. Since 2006, it has entertained over one million people from all over the world, with its celebration of Australian stock men and women at work and play.

Australian Outback Spectacular was originally conceptualised by Village Roadshow Theme Parks Chairman John Menzies who identified the opportunity to promote Australian culture to domestic and international visitors. The show is set in an enclosed arena and features a one and a half hour show extravaganza with spectacular audio and visual effects. The production incorporates up to 40 horses, skilled stockmen and women and other favourite Australian animals, as well as a delicious three-course Australian BBQ dinner featuring a Bushmans swag salad, quality Australian beef, vegetables, damper, pavlova and drinks.

The Queensland Tourism Awards also recognised the 2009 Gold Coast Airport Marathon as winner of the major festival and events award, the Steve Irwin ecotourism award went to Daintree Discovery Centre and the Indigenous tourism award to Riverlife Mirrabooka.

Riverlife Mirrabooka, Brisbane Visitor Information and Booking Centre, The Discovery Group, Griffith University and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway each received Hall of Fame status after taking out their award categories for the third year in a row.
