Temperature Controlled Stadia at the Heart of Qatar’s FIFA World Cup Bid
Australasian Leisure Management has learned more about Qatar's plans for temperature controlled stadia to host games at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
With world football governing body FIFA requiring that the World Cup be held in June/July, when average daytime temperatures in Qatar can exceed 40°C, the Qatari Government plans to introduce innovative stadium cooling technologies for both players and spectators if its bid is successful.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, son of the Emir of Qatar and Chairman of the Qatar 2022 World Cup Bid Committee recently explained "a stadium with controlled temperature is the answer (and) we have already set in motion this process."
Al-Thani added that there are "many, many options, all of them environmentally friendly to ensure that climate is no longer an issue (with our bid).
"Our legacy will be football in Qatar being played all year round and our having progressed revolutionary ideas and revolutionary technology that can be used in any other country.
"We'll soon be unveiling a number of visionary, state-of-the-art ideas for iconic stadia and infrastructure and we're very excited by the challenge of ensuring that passion for football is the only thing that will make spectators hot."
Qatar's investment in temperature controlled stadia is further evidence of its determination to host a major global sports event.
Planned stadia at the core of Qatar's FIFA World Cup bid.
Qatar's Aspire Zone, the site of the Khalifa International Stadium, will be the central location for Qatarâs 2022 FIFA World Cup if their bid is successful.
The Aspire Zone was profiled in the November/December 2009 issue of Australasian Leisure Management.
