Teenager dies after incident at Newcastle’s Lambton Pool

Teenager dies after incident at Newcastle’s Lambton Pool
October 18, 2017

An investigation has commenced into the death of a 17-year-old boy at Newcastle’s Lambton Swimming Centre yesterday.

The teenager died in Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital after he was apparently restrained by bystanders following an alleged assault on an employee of the Lane 4 Aquatics managed facility.

NSW Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the death with the Newcastle Herald reporting that someone jumped in the pool and disrupted swimming lessons.

According to a statement, witnesses restrained the teenager before NSW Police arrived.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

Newcastle City Council interim Chief Executive Jeremy Bath said the teenager became unconscious and then went into cardiac arrest.

Bath told the ABCd “the 17-year-old boy, who was with a carer at the time became quite distressed, Police were called to the pool, he became unconscious, went into cardiac arrest, he was taken to John Hunter Hospital where he sadly passed away.”

Bath advised that the staff member assaulted was fine, adding “it was a bit of push and shove, it was mostly verbal, with the staff member just trying to reassure the young man that he just that he needed to calm down.

"But unfortunately he didn't. He proceeded to start hitting a brick wall, and from there it ultimately ended tragically."

A NSW Police spokeswoman said Police were not involved in the boy's death but it was procedure to launch a critical incident investigation.

That investigation will be subject to an independent review.

The facility (pictured above) has reopened this morning (Wednesday 18th October).
