Surf Life Saving Australia selects new members for 2024/25 Youth Working Group
November 24, 2024

Surf Life Saving Australia has advised that 16 new members have been selected for the 2024/25 SLSA Youth Working Group.

The 16 members include 14 State/Territory representatives (two from each State/Territory) and the previous and current SLSA Youth Lifesaver of the Year.

The purpose of the YWG is to represent youth member views, needs, concerns, values, and ideas by engaging youth members to shape the future of the organisation for the next generation.

Over the past 12 months, the YWG have contributed to the SLSA Strategic Plan, the Diversity & Inclusion Framework and SLSA Mental Health Research. They have also provided insight and shared their expertise on a range of topics including youth pathways, engagement opportunities and member wellbeing and safety.

Members have also had the opportunity to engage with key SLSA leaders, including Chief Executive, Adam Weir; Chair of Development, Nancy Joseph; Chair of Education, Tracey Hare-Boyd; Wellbeing Advisor, Sam Fien; Officials Adviser, Jenny Kenny; as well as Former Ironwoman, Bonnie Hancock and Founder & Managing Director of Inclusive Sports Design, Michael Woods.

Outgoing YWG member, Taylah Moffit of Kempsey Crescent Head SLSC in New South Wales, said she thoroughly enjoyed her time as part of the YWG, finding it a really rewarding experience.

Fellow outgoing member, Jazmin Kalmar of Secret Harbour SLSC in Western Australia, found the most rewarding part of the YWG was “seeing that young voices are cared for and wanted in surf lifesaving, and getting a broader idea on how things are run in different States.”

Samuel Terry of Soldiers Beach SLSC in New South Wales, will serve his second term as part of the YWG and said he enjoyed discussing new and innovative ideas with youth from around Australia, giving him the opportunity to learn about different strategies and ideas that are utilised.

YWG members serve a combination of one-to-two-year terms.
