Supercars to race for points at 2018 Melbourne Grand Prix
June 2, 2017

Championship points will be awarded for the first time when the Supercars race at next year's Australian Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne.

Supercars have long raced as an exhibition at the Albert Park event in March, but the race's status has been upgraded to a championship round in amove that is likely to add new interest to the race program.

The deal will also see Supercars featuring at the Australian Grand Prix for the next six years.

The Supercars Championship is one of Australia’s largest sports, and is an important part of Victoria’s major events calendar.

Commenting on the new arrangements, Virgin Australia Supercars Championship Chief Executive James Warburton said he was delighted with the developments.

Warburon stated “a Championship round and the six-year contract extension through to 2023 will be warmly received by our fans and add a new dimension to the event.”

"This fantastic opportunity to host championship races at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit will further showcase Supercars on the world-stage.”

Australian Grand Prix Corporation Chief Executive Andrew Westacott added “we continually listen to our fans and there has been a strong appetite for a Supercars Championship round, so we see the partnership as a highly beneficial one and we are excited to bring this opportunity to fruition.”
