read moreSunshine Coast Regional Council is marking Parks Week with a celebration of its open spaces and community input to the area’s parks.
The Council is using Parks Week, which runs from 7th to 15th March, as the anchor for a celebration of the Sunshine Coast’s many green spaces, with families, locals and visitors being encouraged to roll up their sleeves with its Parks and Gardens team and plant native trees, to improve the area’s natural assets.
A Council statement advises “we all know that each tree planted will help provide habitat for our local wildlife and create more shade for park users.
“Trees provide environmental, social and economic benefits, such as insulating carbon, producing oxygen, filtering pollutants, providing shade and cooling local surrounds.
“Our parks also provide much needed habitat, shelter and feed for our wildlife and have great benefits for children and families who take the time to enjoy our parks, by helping reduce stress, foster recovery and enhance concentration.”
With locals encouraged to become involved in tree planning a first planting event was held at
Forestwood Drive Park in Maroochydore yesterday (7th March) while the Parks and Gardens team will be on hand at Little Mountain Common Park in Little Mountain on Saturday 14th March.
The planting events see residents able to enjoy free park activities such as yoga, shooting hoops, handball, hula hoops, skipping ropes and hopscotch with native trees given to the first 100 families who attend.
Parks Week events is organised by Parks and Leisure Australia and Recreation Aotearoa.
