South Australian Government to back Adelaide Convention Centre with $2 million events bidding fund
The South Australian Government is to provide a fund of $2 million over two years to help the Adelaide Convention Centre bid for events.
Announcing the backing, South Australian Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said conventions were a great investment, because business travellers spent an average of $600 per day when visiting Adelaide, three times the sum spent by other visitors.
Minister Bignell said the bidding fund would help offer incentives and discounts to organisations looking for venues, stating "we're happy to be here standing tall as Adelaide and South Australia, to be up against Brisbane and Melbourne and Sydney, and say 'We're in this marketplace to and we're going to match and beat whatever bids we want to go after'.
"The only bids we're going to go after are going to have to be worth $35 to every dollar investment that we make."
The bidding fund will be administered by the South Australian Tourism Commission and used only to attract events for the Adelaide Convention Centre.
Minister Bignell added that South Australian is already set to attract 55,000 people from interstate or overseas to the Convention Centre over the next three years.
Pro development tourism lobby group the Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) has welcomed the fund saying it will help the Adelaide Convention Centre attract more top-level conferences with flow on benefits for the broader visitor economy.
TTF Chief Executive Ken Morrison stated "congratulations to the (South Australian) Government for backing in a high-yield visitor segment to grow the state's economy.
"Adelaide Convention Centre's $350-million upgrade will be further supported by this expanded bid fund helping the city capitalise on these world class facilities.
"This is a smart investment by government as funds are only expended when the state secures the event, ensuring a guaranteed return on investment.
"Business events attract high-yield travellers who often bring family and friends, stay a few extra days and explore regional destinations.
"Conferences and top-level events deliver significant visitor numbers, supporting accommodation businesses, restaurants, transport operators and retail precincts.
"South Australia's visitor economy supports 18,263 businesses and 33,000 jobs and contributes $5 billion in GSP every year.
"It is encouraging to see the state's commitment to the industry as it strives to reach its Tourism 2020 goal of increasing visitor expenditure to $8 billion by 2020."
