South Australia rejects duck shooting ban
Greens MP Mark Parnell introduced the Bill in the South Australian Upper House to bring the State in line with NSW, Queensland and Western Australia. It failed to get support from Labor, Liberal or independent MPs.
Parnell explained "there is simply no reason for our native birds to be shot out of the sky for sport ... the killing and maiming of native birds is indefensible and has no place in a compassionate society."
Field and Game Australia Chief Executive Rod Drew said waterfowl hunters across Australia would applaud the South Australian decision, based on science and not animal rights philosophy, stating "this is the second time the SA Parliament has defeated a Bill to ban duck and quail hunting.
"SA hunters have a long and proud history of dedication to waterfowl and wetland habitat conservation and have been able to demonstrate that there are significant research and environmental benefits from a well-regulated and managed duck and quail season.
"This approach is consistent with world's best practice."
Drew said South Australian hunters were preparing for the next season and had helped the State's Department of Environment and Heritage staff in a survey of waterfowl and habitat conditions which revealed bird numbers had improved significantly.
The South Australian Government still has to announce if and when a hunting season will be declared.
