Sim Leisure opens nature-based adventure park

After 20 years of designing, building and managing theme parks around the world, Penang, Malaysia-based Sim Leisure Group has opened the first phase of 'Escape', a new type of theme park.
Located on an 18 hectare site at Teluk Bahang, Penang next to the Penang Butterfly Farm, Escape's first phase is Adventureplay. Far removed from contemporary thrill ride provisioned theme parks, Adventureplay is a nature based attractions offering adventurous play and team-building activities.
For adults, the Monkey Business attraction will challenge even the fittest and bravest with its criss-cross network of ropes and nets tied to pillars and platforms while The Gecko Tower is another climbing fun for those who want to have a go at climbing up the wall of a building.
For the chidren, the park offers Foxy Burrows, a Tots Trail, Zoom Bug and even a Discovery Dig area for the little ones who like to try their hand at 'prospecting for gold'.
Every attraction at Adventureplay involves climbing, crawling, walking, trekking and even free-falling in a safe managed environment.
Emphasing the attraction's safety concerns, Sim Leisure founder and Chief Executive Sim Choo Kheng explains "the rope obstacle course is a certified European Rope Course Safety Standard and all of our equipment and safety measures have been audited."
Placing emphasis on making nature as fun as possible for children and the young at heart, the entire project is built around existing greenery with minimal environmental impact.
Sim adds "if we look back, our forefathers were environmentally-friendly, much more so than the commercially-driven 'eco-projects' that are being promoted everywhere nowadays."
Explaining the Escape concept, Sim adds "demand for healthy outdoor family leisure facility is growing (and) after two decades of creating fun for our clients, we want to redefine the concept of the theme park, and create something more socially responsible and sustainable."
When complete the Escape concept will include three areas: Adventureplay; a waterpark - Waterplay; and the Escape Hotel a tree top resort of 20 family treehouses.
Sim expects that Adventureplay will attract over 350,000 visitors annually, adding that children will be educated on the benefits of recycling and promoting the usage of low carbon footprint materials.
Over 20 years, Sim Leisure has been providing turnkey services for the waterpark and theme park industry around the world, with major projects have been successfully designed, themed, executed and managed in international markets.
Clients included the Lost Paradise of Dilmun in Bahrain, Snow Penguins at Ski Dubai, the soon-to-open Yas Island Waterpark in Abu Dhabi, Universal Studios in Singapore, Legoland Denmark, Legoland in Malaysia, Yerevan Waterworld in Armenia, and Aquapolis in Bulgaria.
With the opening of Escape, Sim is expanding the company's core business towards creating and exporting a Malaysian-created theme park brand, believing that the Escape concept will establish itself as world-class attractions brand that will expanded and, potentially, be franchised internationally.
