World Gym in Prospect, which also has a creche (occupied at the time of the alleged incident) was the site of a targeted attack this morning.
Police are investigating whether the shooting is linked to the Allameddine and Hamzy families.
The feud between the Hamzy and Alameddine families escalated inlate October after a daylight shooting left a father and son dead.
When asked if the shooting could be related to the ongoing feud between the families, Blacktown Police Area Commander, Superintendent Steve Egginton told ABC "that's one of the lines of inquiry we're looking at."
The ABC report that Murat Gulasi was shot in the leg during the attack, and taken to Westmead Hospital where he remains in a stable condition. According to Superintendent Egginton, Gulasi was not cooperating with officers. Sources close to the investigation claim Gulasi is an associate of the Alameddines.
Superintendent Egginton described the attack as "disgusting" and said the gym had a creche attached to it adding "a number of the bullets that were fired from these offenders have actually entered the gym and posted a significant danger to people inside, including children. As we can all appreciate, innocent children being involved in these situations is just absolutely abhorrent."
It has not yet been determined how many offenders were involved, however police believe those responsible were waiting for specific people to arrive at the gym. Police say a long history of violence is linked to turf wars in Sydney's south-west.
