Shoosh for Kids Week aims to encourage better spectator behaviour in community sport

Shoosh for Kids Week aims to encourage better spectator behaviour in community sport
May 13, 2018

Local sporting clubs across NSW are setting out to encourage positive sideline behaviour this winter season through the Shoosh for Kids campaign.

The season-long campaign will be given launched as of tomorrow with the Shoosh for Kids awareness week running from 14th to 20th May.

Winter sports participating in the initiative include AFL, basketball, football, hockey, netball, softball, tennis, rugby league and rugby union.

The NSW Office of Sport (OOSNSW) wants clubs and organisations to sign-up as supporters, with OOSNSW Chief Executive Matt Miller advising “we want junior games to be positive, happy places for kids to enjoy themselves while making new friends and being active.

“Promoting Shoosh for Kids week at local clubs and associations across NSW means there is a consistent message for grassroots sport.

“We want to ensure that all players, officials and spectators have a positive experience, and we want everyone, especially children, to continue their involvement in sport because it’s a fun and encouraging environment.

“Most people do the right thing. However, we want to remind spectators that there is no place for negative comments in local sport.”

In 2015, the Newcastle Junior Rugby League Association launched the Shoosh for Kids weekend, which originated from the New Zealands ‘Lets kids be kids campaign’ which received great support.’

OOSNSW Regional Development Officer, Joanne Barrett added “bringing the Shoosh for Kids to the Central West means that regardless of the sport families will attend on the weekend they will get the same message ‘keep your comments positive or shoosh’.

“We want ensure that all players, officials and spectators, experience positive that the sporting fields are positive, as we want everyone to play sport for many years to come because it’s a fun and positive thing to do.”
