Shoalhaven holds events and awards to mark NAIDOC Week 2021
June 22, 2021

Shoalhaven City Council will mark NAIDOC Week, 4th – 11th July, by hosting a number of community events including a Morning Tea; supporting the NAIDOC Family Fun Day and partnering with neighbouring Councils for the 2021 Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards.

Across Australia each July, NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The 2021 Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards recognise the talents, excellence, and significant contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations make in the Illawarra-Shoalhaven region, and will this year be hosted by Shellharbour City Council.

Shoalhaven City Mayor Amanda Findley is encouraging the community to nominate deserving community members and notes “The 2021 NAIDOC Awards nominations are now open, with nominations being accepted across six categories. I encourage the community to nominate deserving members of the community by heading to the Shellharbour City Council’s online nomination form.

“The 2021 Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards are planned and delivered by Shoalhaven, Shellharbour and Wollongong City Councils and Kiama Municipal Council. An amazing joint effort, recognising the significant contributions by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make not just in our region but across the Shoalhaven and Illawarra as a whole.”

The following categories are open for nominations;

•Aboriginal Elder of the Year (male and female)

•Aboriginal Worker of the Year

•Aboriginal Young Achiever of the Year (male and female)

•Aboriginal Community Volunteer of the Year

•Aboriginal Organisation or Project of the Year

•Outstanding Contribution to Reconciliation (Aboriginal or Non-Aboriginal)
