Sea World’s Research and Rescue team will be making a series of conservation presentations in and around the attraction’s Penguin Encounter exhibit on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th April in advance of World Penguin Day on 25th April.
There will also be a range of fun games, face painting and exciting Penguin experiences with guests able to touch breeding rocks, Gentoo egg shells and feathers specific to the Penguins you see in exhibit.
The weekend will also see Discovery Quest activity at the Penguin Encounter exhibit with guests able to collect a Discovery Quest activity sheet at the front gates, find the answers to the Penguin facts and go in the draw to win a two night stay at Sea World Resort, as well as an experience with the Penguins.
Sea World’s Penguin Encounter Team Member, Paul Revie said World Penguin Day is a special occasion for all the penguins in the park, commenting “the King and Gentoo Penguins are instinctively curious and the fish cake, toys and treats provide colourful and dynamic enrichment for the birds.
“It is important to raise awareness about the effect ocean rubbish has on Penguins, as their inquisitive nature can be detrimental when they choose discarded fishing line and rubbish as their new toys which can result in entanglements.
“The Penguins at Sea World are ambassadors for climate change and the amazing Penguin Encounter exhibit allows our guests to gain insight into Penguins in an environment which provides a unique educational experience where they can learn about the effects of climate change in the Antarctic region.”
The internationally recognised, World Penguin Day marks the annual northward migration. Adelie penguins start migrating on the 25th April every year to escape the long, dark days of winter in the Antarctic. This special day is celebrated worldwide even though penguins are predominantly found in the Southern Hemisphere.
Sew World is also offering a range of Penguin products in their retail outlets over the weekend with 20% of sales to be donated to Penguin Projects funded by the Sea World Research & Rescue Foundation.
