read moreToday’s launch of the Salti Active Canberra program has seen the biggest Salti floating fitness session held at the ACT's Gungahlin Leisure Centre.
Joined by local sports stars and newly trained Salti instructors, the facility's 50 metre pool was filled with Salti's multi coloured floating fitness platforms/mats with participants joining in with a fun, enthusiastic workout on water.
The Salti Active Canberra program has been made possible after receiving funding from the ACT Government, helping to establish the exciting and innovative Salti program at both the Gungahlin Leisure Centre and the Lakeside Leisure Centre in Tuggeranong from later this month.
ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry advised “the ACT Government provided $25,000 to support Salti through the Participation Innovation Fund which is aimed at supporting new, creative and targeted physical activity programs in the ACT to encourage more people to get active and to make it easier for people to get involved, particularly the cohorts that remain underrepresented in sports and general physical activities.
“Sport and physical activity offer a vehicle to improve gender equality, break cultural barriers, and improve social outcomes for the community - and participation is key,”
Salti founder and Canberra local, Jo Flynn is encouraging people to give the classes a go noting “the classes are challenging, yet light-hearted. People will find they’re attracted for the fun appeal but keep coming back for the workout and the overall boost in wellbeing. You won’t be able to wipe the smile off your face.
“The classes tend to attract women from around 25-45, however all demographics are welcome.
"It's great to see our vision of contributing to creating happy, healthy communities is being recognised with the support from the ACT Government."
Lisa Giacomelli, YMCA NSW Chief Operating Officer has explained that with three different Float programs on offer, all abilities will be catered for, stating "the Y is really excited to be offering new and diverse programs to engage the wider community and provide different ways for people to get active."
This funding will see Salti classes implemented across two locations, Gungahlin Leisure and Lakeside (Tuggeranong) with a free come and try open session (21st and 22nd September), after which Salti will become a regular group fitness program at each facility.
Salti are a Canberra based team describing themselves as having “a huge passion for the water” and wanting to “show Australians, and the rest of the world, how being active can be fun, while getting people excited about their local pools again.”
Salti advise that from launching classes in Canberra, facilities are now running classes in Sydney, the Central Coast, the NSW South Coast and Queensland. Salti plan on working with the aquatics industry “to grow these locations across the country and internationally so everyone can experience the fun and benefits of a floating aqua program."
