read moreThe City of Rockingham, a local government area in Perth's far southern suburbs, has endorsed the final concept design for stage two development of its flagship aquatic and leisure facility - the Aqua Jetty – which will include the development of a wellness suite along with an expanded ‘learn to swim’ facility, aquatic play spaces and larger fitness facility.
Aqua Jetty, located on Warnbro Sound Avenue in Warnbro, currently features a heated 50 metre outdoor pool, heated 25 metre indoor pool, sauna, hydrotherapy pool, fully equipped gym, multipurpose indoor courts, outdoor courts, café and a crèche.
Under the new concept design endorsed by Council, the facility will undergo major upgrades across several areas, with construction planned to commence in mid-2023.
The wellness suite will include a larger hydrotherapy pool, along with sauna, and steam rooms.
Three adult change facilities are proposed throughout the Centre as well as a number of universal accessible toilets and family change facilities. All water areas at Aqua Jetty will have improved accessibility via ramp or access platforms. The City has established a Lived Experience working group that will assist in providing design input to ensure accessibility elements are considered and where possible included within the detailed design.
An expanded ‘learn to swim pool’ will be developed, which will assist in alleviating the demand on other water spaces at the facility. The leisure pool will be redesigned to accommodate a new interactive splash pad and water play areas, and the water slide area will also be redesigned and expanded.
A larger gymnasium and group fitness spaces are a key part of the concept design. The café, crèche and reception will be relocated to the front of the building, with additional car parking and improved traffic management options being included as part of the design process,
City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin said planning for future generations was a key aspiration in the City’s Strategic Community Plan, and Aquatic Jetty stage two would be integral to achieving this.
“Through the City’s Community Infrastructure Plan and several studies over the past decade it has been identified that Aqua Jetty requires upgrades and expansion to ensure it is able to better meet current and future community expectations,” Mayor Hamblin said.
“Council’s endorsement of the final concept design is an exciting early step for the project, and the City looks forward to commencing detailed design immediately. To help deliver stage two of the Aqua Jetty the City has successfully secured $10 million in State Government grant funding through the WA Recovery Plan.
“The City also engaged extensively with AJ users and community members during the feasibility study process and prior to the final concept design being endorsed. This consultation included three community presentations at the AJ facility in December 2021, and the City thanks participants for sharing their thoughts.”
