Cyclists taking part in the 2020 Harbour2Vine Cycle Classic, cycled 58km from the coast (Rydges Newcastle) to the Hunter (Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley), raising $15,201 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
Held earlier this month, the 12th annual Cycle Classic restructuring involved reduced numbers being sent off in two tranches to allow for appropriate social distancing.
All riders successfully completed the course, finishing at the Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley with a BBQ for riders and their families. Riders were also fed and hydrated along the way at a pit stop, with Coca-Cola Amatil, Bounce Australia and YouFoodz providing drinks and snacks.
The Harbour2Vine Cycle Classic is the brainchild of Dr Jerry Schwartz, the owner of three hotels in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, as well as the Hunter Valley Conference Centre and Lovedale Brewery.
Dr Schwartz said that while the Classic had to adopt a revised format, the passion and commitment by participants remained 100% adding “the cycle classic gives both local residents and visitors the opportunity to participate in an inspiring cycle race, while raising money for an outstanding charity.
“With the past year having more than its fair share of emergencies, people really appreciate and support the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, and the moneys raised from Harbour2Vine will go specifically towards funding a Geo Simulator at their Belmont base to assist with training of pilots.
“I’d like to thank all the sponsors, our hotels and of course all the regular and new riders who contributed to such a worthy cause.”
