Restored Big Dipper Tower lights up Luna Park Sydney

Restored Big Dipper Tower lights up Luna Park Sydney
June 10, 2016

Luna Park Sydney has today unveiled the new look Big Dipper Tower following a six month restoration project that saw 4,440 energy efficient LED lights added to the building’s exterior, as well as an update to the original features and ornate architraves.

Luna Park Sydney Senior Manager Brad Loxley said the historic attraction was excited to showcase the intricate restoration of the Big Dipper Tower to the public this weekend.

Loxley explained “I’m thrilled to announce that the Big Dipper Tower will be officially lit up and reopen to the general public this weekend. We thank our guests for their patience during the restoration period and we’re excited for you all to experience the sparkly new addition to the Park.

“We’ve ensured that the heritage and history of the structure remained intact, while modernising this architectural feature with state-of-the-art LED tech and decorative elements.”

The Tower is now emblazoned with Luna Park’s traditional colour theme and thousands of lights will illuminate the structure, adding to the carnival atmosphere the Park is so famous for.

The Big Dipper Tower served as the entrance for the Big Dipper ride, which was the Park’s signature attraction from 1935 until 1979, and then again from 1995 to 2001. The structure’s architecture is inspired by the ‘Taj Mahal’ and features hand carved minarets and a 6-metre high silver dome.

Although not part of a ride experience, the Tower is a symbol of the Park’s journey since opening to the public in 1935 - the new LED lights represent the constantly evolving nature of the iconic location, while still remaining in touch with its heritage.

In addition to the impressive restoration of the Big Dipper Tower, Luna Park Sydney looks forward to announcing another exciting addition to the Park’s suite of rides in the coming weeks, as well an announcing Luna Park’s first Winter Wonderland with Ice Rink, winter markets, festival lighting and snow times for the upcoming holidays.
