read moreThe City of Greater Geelong Council is using more than 50 tonnes of recycled crumbed rubber to upgrade one of the local government area’s most well-known sporting precincts.
The recycled rubber has been sourced from used truck tyres and will see the athletics track at Landy Field in South Geelong installed with a base rubber and sealer coat. A topcoat rubber will then be installed in the coming weeks.
Commenting on the project, Council Chief Executive, Ali Wastie stated “our Environment Strategy promotes a circular economy through sustainable procurement practices, supports new and existing markets for recovered resources, and promotes increased use of recycled materials in road, building and other infrastructure constructions.
“The work being undertaken at Landy Field is innovative in its nature and current users as well as future generations of athletes will benefit from these substantial upgrades.”
The $1.5 million renewal of the athletics track is being fully funded by the Council and will see the installation of a brand new surface in blue and grey, plus relocation of the hammer and discuss cage to allow for more competition events to be carried out at the same time.
In a statement, the Council went on to advised that the renewal of the Landy Field track will mean the facility retains its World Athletics Class 2 accreditation.
