Queensland Museum Chief Executive used corporate credit card for personal items

Queensland Museum Chief Executive used corporate credit card for personal items
February 13, 2018

Professor Suzanne Miller, Chief Executive of the Queensland Museum and Queensland's Chief Scientist, allegedly used her corporate credit card to purchase a drone, high-pressure cleaner and industrial fan for herself.

Professor Miller, who has stepped down from her role in the wake of charges for fraud charges in the middle of last year, appeared briefly before a Brisbane magistrate at the end of last month to face 31 fresh charges from the Queensland’s Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).

The CCC charged Professor Miller in December, accusing the high-profile executive of using her corporate card to purchase items worth more than $30,000 for her own use.

Court documents show that the purchases, made between September 2013 and July 2017, were for items including a drone, GoPro camera, Polaroid instant camera, solar system model, an industrial fan, external hard drive, pink LED lights, scooter, high-pressure cleaner and electronic drum kit.

Professor Miller is also alleged to have purchased an iPad mini for another person. She is further accused of dishonestly causing financial detriment to the Queensland Museum Network on 18 occasions.

The matter was adjourned to be heard with other related charges levelled at Professor Miller last year.

Last July, Professor Miller, who earned $400,000 a year, was charged with fraud for dishonesty claiming $45,500 worth of health insurance and for forging an immigration letter.

Born in Scotland Edinburgh, Professor Miller also held a range of advisory roles, including Chair of the Council of Australasian Museum Directors.

Professor Miller is also facing a charge of "uttering" relating to the alleged use a forged immigration letter.

Bail conditions for the fraud charges include that Professor Miller had to surrender her UK and Australian passports.

Professor Miller must also not attend the museum or contact past or present museum staff, board members, employees of the Corporate Administration Agency, or contact any witnesses or potential witnesses.

Professor Miller was appointed to the role of Queensland’s Chief Scientist in December 2016.

She is Queensland’s third Chief Scientist and first woman to hold the post.
