Queensland multicultural events share $1.3 million funding in 2019

Queensland multicultural events share $1.3 million funding in 2019
December 6, 2018

More than 150 multicultural events to be held throughout the State in 2019 will share in $1.3 million in funding from the Queensland Government’s Celebrating Multicultural Grants program.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the government had doubled multicultural grants funding to $6 million over three years, delivering on a key election commitment.

“One of the best parts of my job is attending a myriad of multicultural festivals with crowds of Queenslanders and seeing how these events build cross cultural understanding and connectedness,” Minister Hinchliffe said.

“Multicultural events are certainly embraced by Queenslanders with some events attracting more than 200,000 people.

“I am proud this extra funding will see our rich diversity celebrated in cities, regional towns and smaller communities right across the state.”

A total of 152 events will receive funding ranging from $3,000 to $20,000 a year for a single event or for the next three years.

Mareeba Shire Council’s Multicultural Festival, Togolese Independence Day and the Eid Down Under Festival are among the kaleidoscope of events being funded.

Funding will go to Mackay Council’s Global Grooves, Bundaberg council’s Chinese New Year Celebrations, Rockhampton Regional Council’s Cultural Festival, Sunshine Coast Regional Council’s Harmony Day event and Balonne Shire’s multicultural lunch.

Other events include the Filipino Barrio Fiesta which will receive $5,000, Townsville’s African Festival, $20,000 a year for three years and the Moreton Bay Multicultural Fiesta Celebrations will receive $8,000 each year for three years.

The Mackay and District Italian Association, the Japanese Society of Gold Coast and the Brisbane French Festival are other successful grant recipients.

“We have so much to celebrate as an inclusive, harmonious and united Queensland,” Minister Hinchliffe said.

“Queensland is home to people from 220 different countries and territories who speak more than 180 languages at home and identify with over 110 different faiths.

“The Queensland Government will continue to promote inclusion and deliver policies that deliver for all Queenslanders, regardless of their background.”
