Queensland Government keen to attract ‘integrated resort’ developments

Queensland Government keen to attract ‘integrated resort’ developments
February 21, 2014

In advance of an 'Expressions of Interest' deadline on 28th February, the Queensland Government is hoping that there will be strong competition to create up to three integrated resort developments in metropolitan and regional Queensland.

Queensland Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney recently reminded interested proponents that they have until 28th February to register their interest in securing licences to establish integrated resort developments with associated gambling licences.

Minister Seeney explained "we are seeking top-notch, internationally competitive projects that will deliver strong economic and community benefits in the areas in which they're located.

"We are setting the bar high for the consortiums expressing interest in these licences. We want real investors, with real time frames and real benefits for the people of Queensland.

"The State expects nothing less than world-class, landmark integrated resort developments that put Queensland and Brisbane on the world stage as an international tourism destination."

Minister Seeney said while a resort and gaming licence has been reserved for the successful developer of Queen's Wharf Brisbane, the location of the other two potential integrated resorts has not been prescribed.

He added "the developments will be a key provider of tourism infrastructure, including hotels, restaurants and conference facilities that can support major events and raise Queensland's profile as a tourism destination.

"My Department has now received 16 registrations of interest in the Queens Wharf and regional Integrated Resort Development process, and more are expected before registrations close."

The most high profile prospective development to date has been from Hong Kong billionaire Henry Fung who last year revealed further details of the planned $4 billion Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort for a site north of Cairns.

Successful EOI proponents in the integrated resort development process will be asked to provide detailed proposals by late 2014, with a view to the announcement of successful proponents in early 2015.
