Queensland Academy of Sport becomes State’s newest Statutory Body

The Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) has become the state’s newest Statutory Body with the Queensland Government having fast-tracked the transition enabling greater efficiency and agility on the road to 2032.
The QAS’ operations under its new structure became effective on 1st July and marks a major milestone for high-performance sport in Queensland.
The change will empower the QAS to operate more independently and effectively, strengthening its ability to support elite athletes and continue to build a world-leading high-performance system.
The high-calibre eight-member inaugural Board - bringing together business, law, communications, and Olympic and Paralympic expertise - will steer the Queensland Academy of Sport into its next chapter as a statutory body, with the members being:
- David Lyons (Chair)
- Cate Campbell OAM
- Ella Sabljak
- Mark James
- Benjamin Ikin
- Alex Baumann
- Susan Rix AM
- Annette Maidment
QLD Minister for Sport and Racing and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tim Mander said the transition was a critical step toward ensuring Queensland athletes were set up for success into the future.
Minister Mander noted “Queensland is already the engine room of Australian sport and with Brisbane 2032 fast approaching, today’s change will help supercharge our athletes’ path to the podium.
“The Queensland Academy of Sport is already considered a world leader in high performance sport and this reform provides the tools and flexibility it needs to thrive in the fast-paced world of elite sport.
“The QAS has been a leader in high-performance sport for more than three decades, and this move will ensure it remains at the forefront for years to come.
“I’d like to thank the QAS team for the incredible work they do in supporting our athletes to achieve their full potential.”
