Pool party to officially launch Sydney’s Prince Alfred Park Pool
Prince Alfred Park Pool in Sydney's Surry Hills celebrated Spring in the Park on Saturday (19th October) marking the facility's official opening - with the event featuring a synchronised swimming display, live music and performances and free light refreshments.
The heated, outdoor pool has attracted more than 50,000 visits in its first five months of operation with a record 1,681 people enjoying a swim on 7th September. The Meadow Café also served over 500 customers on that Saturday, and bike racks proved so popular that plans are underway to install more.
At Spring in the Park, pool operator Belgravia Leisure also hosted free learn-to-swim assessments, aquarobics classes and other activities for children.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the pool, which won a major architecture award at the 2013 Sydney Design Awards on Wednesday, was a winner, stating "it's time to celebrate the success of Sydneys newest and greenest public swimming pool.
"With the Citys largest green roof and beautiful design, this state-of-the-art pool is already attracting thousands of Sydneysiders as a place to relax, exercise, enjoy the outdoors and meet up with friends."
The 50-metre heated outdoor pool, with accessible entry, is the first major building designed by Potts Point-based practice Neeson Murcutt Architects.
The $20.5 million pool uses state-of-the-art technology for filtration and monitoring, features the best in sustainable practices with water-saving fixtures and energy-efficient LED lighting, and makes the most of natural ventilation and lighting.
Part of an extensive upgrade to the 7.5-hectare Prince Alfred Park in 50 years, the overall facility now includes:
• Five new international standard tennis and basketball courts;
• An underground stormwater reuse system, which supplies 95% of the park's water needs;
• Two childrens playgrounds;
• The refurbishment of the historic Coronation Centre;
• An exercise circuit/outdoor gym;
• Energy-efficient lighting; and
• Landscaping with hundreds of new trees and plants and a native meadow.
