Parks Victoria welcomes first guests to revamped Point Hicks Lighthouse Reserve

Parks Victoria welcomes first guests to revamped Point Hicks Lighthouse Reserve
July 24, 2018

The newly refurbished Point Hicks Lightstation has been welcoming guests its first guests since coming under management by Parks Victoria.

Comprising two cottages, a bungalow and managers house, as well as the lighthouse, the Point Hicks Lighthouse Reserve is a place for guests to enjoy outstanding coastal views, watch migrating whales pass by, climb the 19th century lighthouse and go on walks along the Thurra sand-dunes. The winter light and possible storms add their own magic and guests can retreat to the wood-fired comfort of their historic accommodation as the night draws in.

Up to 18 people can be accommodated at Point Hicks, with the two cottages sleeping eight each, and the bungalow more suited to couples.

Located within the Croajingolong National Park and on the edge of the Point Hicks Marine National Park, approximately 500 kilometres east of Melbourne, the lighthouse serves as a warning beacon for vessels in the southern reaches of the Tasman Sea of the South Pacific Ocean, and the north eastern reaches of the Bass Strait.

Commenting on the change of management, Parks Victoria District Manager-East Gippsland Will McCutcheon stated “many people have enjoyed staying at Point Hicks over the past 20 or so years, and Parks Victoria looks forward to welcoming them back, along with first-time visitors to enjoy this special place with its historic lighthouse, incredible coastal scenery and rich Aboriginal history.

“The Point Hicks lightstation is a great base for exploring adjacent Croajingolong National Park. There are a range of walks of varying length allowing people to immerse themselves in East Gippsland’s wilderness coast.”
