read moreSwan Hill Rural City Council, located in Victoria's north west, has announced a signficant funding commitment from the Federal Government’s Growing Regions Program, which will see riverfront precincts in Swan Hill and Robinvale transformed into visionary spaces for future generations.
Council Mayor Stuart King is excited about the Reinvigorating Our Riverfront project, and highlighted its multifaceted approach aimed at enriching the cultural fabric of the region while enhancing education, history, and the region’s tourism offering.
Mayor King noted “a $5,076,157 funding injection will empower us to create inclusive recreational spaces that not only enhance community wellbeing but also pay homage to our rich natural environment and history.
“This funding is a real game changer for our region, further developing our riverfront precincts, for both residents and visitors alike.
“The replacement of the Pental Island Pedestrian Bridge will not only reconnect Pental Island and Pioneer Settlement but also serve as a link for exploring the area’s illustrious history and creating educational opportunities.
“Our vision for Pental Island is to cultivate an inclusive, Aboriginal-led space that fosters the sharing and strengthening of local cultural connections to our region.
“We are thrilled that this funding will materialise the Pental Island Cultural Space, stage one, providing a platform for the local Aboriginal Community to offer cultural, tourism, and educational experiences.”
Mayor King said project funding also planned to deliver significant infrastructure upgrades including the replacement of the Swan Hill Ten Steps and the installation of a terrace wharf project in Robinvale.
“The vital replacement of the Swan Hill Ten Steps will ensure continued river access and enjoyment for generations to come.
“The project will incorporate boat mooring facilities and address riverbank erosion issues.
“In Robinvale, a Terrace will transform the riverfront area into a dynamic waterfront precinct that reflects the unique character of the region, while also providing opportunities for recreation and leisure.”
Mayor King said the funding was recognition from the Federal Government highlighting the importance and strength of our municipality and was a testament to Council staff’s commitment to achieving a positive long term vision for our communities.
Council Chief Executive Scott Barber expressed profound gratitude for the funding approval, underscoring the project’s pivotal role in shaping the future of the region.
“We extend heartfelt thanks to the Growing Regions Program for their generous support of our vision to rejuvenate our riverfront spaces.
“Together, we anticipate unlocking the full potential of our riverfront as a dynamic and inviting destination for all,” Barber added.
Detailed design works for these projects will now commence, with construction expected to begin within 12 months.
As these projects evolve, there will be opportunities for community consultation and engagement.
