Muliple venues to participate in Melbourne’s inaugural Art After Dark event
May 2, 2022

Numerous venues will participate in Melbourne’s inaugural Art After Dark event, held over13th and 14th May, which offers an extensive program including First Nations live music, light projections, art exhibitions, DJs and film screenings.

First Nations rapper BRIGGS will start things off performing in Fed Square, which will also host French artist Joanie Lemercier’s installation ‘Constellations’ which is in Australia for the first time from Brussels.

NGV will welcome the return of popular exhibition, Mass, from Triennial 2017, while NGV International’s iconic bluestone building will be transformed with a light projection curated as part of the free QUEER: Stories from the NGV Collection, along with an immersive installation, EYE HEAR U MAGIK 2020, in the Great Hall.

Set to be an audience favourite, Midnight at Pink Lake - a 360-degree immersive projection - will take place in the dome of the La Trobe Reading Room at the State Library.

Arts Centre Melbourne will present an evening of nostalgia on stage with live performances, including Australian home-grown heroes Human Nature on Saturday 14th May.

Keen musos can also look back in time at the Australian Music Vault, which will stay open late with curators and tour guides telling stories and engaging with visitors about the history of Aussie music.

Melbourne Museum will also come alive for ‘Museum Universe’ with projections, pop-up bars and DJs. People can also get up close to the newly unveiled Triceratops skeleton.

ACMI will present Gillian Wearing: Editing Life with Photo 2022 International Festival of Photography and other free exhibitions and film programmings.

Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula noted the new event “will bring tens of thousands of people into the CBD boosting our night-time economy.”

“Art After Dark Melbourne is an exciting way for Melburnians to discover something new at our unsurpassed cultural venues.”

Victorian Minister for Creative Industries Danny Pearson added “Art After Dark offers even more reasons for Victorians to rekindle their love affair with Melbourne’s CBD, from late night gigs, fantastic bars and restaurants to the very best our nation’s culture capital has to offer.”

“We’re throwing open the doors to our iconic cultural destinations and inviting Victorians to experience them in a new light, filled with the very best of local talent, food and art as part of this exciting new after dark concept.”

Art After Dark will run on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th May from 6pm – 1am.  For further details go to artafterdark.com.au
