NSW Opposition leader rules out knocking down Sydney’s Allianz and ANZ Stadiums

NSW Opposition leader rules out knocking down Sydney’s Allianz and ANZ Stadiums
March 16, 2018

NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley has finally clarified his stance on Sydney's major sporting venues, saying a Labor Government would not knock down and rebuild either the Allianz Stadium or ANZ Stadium.

Having previously criticised the $2 billion cost of the NSW Government’s plans to rebuild stadiums, Foley this week clarified his position, stating “we won't be knocking down and rebuilding either Moore Park or Olympic Park Stadium because there's much greater priorities for NSW.”

The NSW Labor leader said he has always believed there is room for a "sensible refurbishment" of the venues, but did not elaborate on how much he would be willing to spend.

Meanwhile, the NSW Government has been forced to support the Opposition's motion for the release of all documents relating to the stadiums after Government MP Matthew Mason-Cox threatened to cross the floor of parliament.

The former Fair Trading Minister has been a vocal opponent of the stadium policy, and is the only government MP to publicly criticise the plan.

Mason-Cox has said the Government could not justify spending more than $2 billion on new stadiums when the state's child protection system was not functioning effectively.

The business case for the NSW Government's stadiums plan is yet to be presented to Cabinet.
