Nick Sautner returns to sport management in new position at Eden Park

Industry executive Nick Sautner has returned to sport and venue management, taking up the position of General Manager Commercial at Eden Park, New Zealand’s largest sports stadium.

Sautner last worked in sport as Chief Operating Officer at the WA Football Commission between 2013 and 2015, resigning in March last year in the wake of a then continuing legal case surrounding his being made redundant from an earlier role at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium in 2013.

Sautner, a former Victorian Football League star, was employed in various roles at Etihad Stadium over 12 years, progressing to the position of Chief Commercial Officer/General Manager until 2013.

Sautner left the WAFC to take up a job with with healthcare solutions provider REDiMED, with whom he had negotiated a deal to become a naming rights sponsor of the WAFL colts competition while at WAFC.

On leaving WAFC, a statement acknowledged his achievements in the role, which also included securing Domain as a new naming rights sponsor and a bigger focus on social media.

The statement explained “on behalf of the WAFC, Chairman Frank Cooper acknowledged Mr Sautner’s contribution, thanked him for his service and wished him well in his future position with REDiMED.”

In joining the management team at Eden Park, Sautner brings his considerable experience of operational and commercial activities, including on-the-ground event management, high level commercial negotiations and the successful delivery and implementation of more than 5,000 events including two British and Irish Lions tours and seven Rugby World Cup matches.

Welcoming the new appointment, Eden Park Trust Chief Executive Guy Ngata stated “Nick’s achievements are considerable and he brings deep and broad experience to the team.

“His efforts will be focused towards the continued sustainable commercial management of our iconic venue. I am delighted to welcome Nick to the team.”

Sautner is credited with increasing stadium commercial sales, supply rights, functions and sponsorship revenues at both Domain Stadium and Etihad Stadium, with considerable commercial experience including securing partnerships with organisations such as Ticketmaster, the Australian Rugby Union, NRL, AFL, McDonalds, China Southern Airlines, Channel 7 and McGuire Media.

A versatile executive, Sautner was responsible for introducing various charitable initiatives in Melbourne and Perth, including a partnership with the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal and the Ronald McDonald House.

He also enhanced the West Australian Football League’s fan engagement through a landmark free-to-air television broadcast deal and an active social media strategy.

Commenting on his appointment Sautner added "I'm delighted to accept this appointment at Eden Park.

“The ‘Garden of Eden’ is an iconic and globally-renowned stadium. I look forward to working in an exceptional team to deliver the best outcomes for Eden Park, our anchor teams, New Zealand and our passionate sports fans around the world.”

Privately, Sautner has dedicated his time to a number of charitable organisations and initiatives. They include volunteering at the centennial commemorations for ANZAC Day and volunteer teaching in Tanzania. Later this year he will be climbing Mt Kilimanjaro for the Prostate Cancer Foundation to provide funds to increase research and raise awareness of the disease.

Sautner holds bachelor degrees in Business and the Arts and an MBA from the University of Melbourne.
