NG Art Gallery closure to herald advancement of new Chippendale Creative Precinct
With the NG Art Gallery in Sydney’s inner west due to close on 14th July, Gallery Director Nicky Ginsberg is set to fully embrace her role as President of the Chippendale Creative Precinct (CCP) in support of Chippendale's fast emerging art and culture scene.
Ginsberg has long envisioned Chippendale's rise in the international contemporary art scene to become ‘the Chelsea of New York’ in her 20 year tenure as a gallerist, curator and Director of NG Art Gallery, to which she now bids a bittersweet farewell.
Sharing a unique vision, Dr Stanley Quek, Executive Chairman of Greencliff Realty and former Chairman of Frasers Property Australia, has been working alongside Ginsberg to develop Chippendale into a dynamic arts and lifestyle destination.
The pair are are now relocating CCP headquarters to the recently refurbished Kensington Street, where they will also house the Kensington Contemporary Gallery – showcasing the works of artists Johnny Romeo, Bernard Ollis, Fiona White, Nick Stathopoulos, India Mark and Nicole Kelly as well as fostering the talent of emerging creative practitioners.
Ginsberg shows no signs of slowing down in a dual role of Creative Director for Kensington Street growing this unique arts, lifestyle and food destination and spearheading the CCP gallery guide rebrand to Destination Chippendale to encompass over 20 galleries and other lifestyle businesses in the precinct.
Chippendale has become the epicentre of emerging art and innovation in Sydney; its thriving creative community having rapidly developed since Ginsberg founded the Chippendale Creative Precinct in 2010.
A think-tank for annual highlights of the Sydney arts calendar including the BEAMS Arts Festival and the Chippendale New World Art Prize, the CCP has become a launchpad for Sydney emerging and established creative practitioners, developing a wider sense of what it means to be a leader in community arts and ideas initiatives.
The monthly Explore Chippendale free gallery walking tours, the Carlton Project Space as a rent-free arts residency program are just some of the other projects that drive the vision for this tight knit creative community.
NG Art Gallery's 19th Century Gothic revival building has born witness to Chippendale through eras of industry and artistry, remodelled by Ginsberg into one of the area's first epicure combinations of food and contemporary art, NG Art Gallery and Mission Restaurant Bar.

NG Art Gallery went on to curate sell out exhibitions, establishing the outstanding careers of artists now exhibiting internationally and featuring in international collections.
Ginsberg's passion for bringing life to art, and vice versa, was celebrated in numerous initiatives such as the Artist Workshops and Feast of the Senses, vibrant dinner parties that welcomed a host of influential Australian artists and cultural commentators.
NG Art Gallery paved the way for Ginsberg's pursuit of greater engagement between people, art and artists themselves.
