New Playground Centre play tower for Upper Hutt’s Timberlea Park

New Playground Centre play tower for Upper Hutt’s Timberlea Park
May 2, 2025

New Zealand’s Upper Hutt City Council Open Spaces and Facilities team will be replacing the old play tower at Timberlea Park with a new tower to be installed this May by Playground Centre.

Playground Centre design and manufacture playground equipment and supplies for clients in New Zealand, Australia and around the world for everything from school and suburban play spaces to landmark destination playgrounds.

Timberlea Park is a popular community space, and ensuring it remains safe and enjoyable for families is a priority for Council. The old play tower, which had deteriorated due to rusting metal footings and age factors, posed safety risks to the children playing on.

This project is not merely an upgrade of equipment but an ongoing commitment by Council to maintaining a safe, sustainable space for future generations.

The replacement will be a new Funnel Web Maxi - Ultimate Play Tower that can accommodate up to 45 users. With its 6-corner design, this new play tower will allow children to climb to the top using various routes and develop their motor skills while they enjoy hanging and balancing on it. The viewing net platform at the top offers a breathtaking view of the entire play area.

The new play tower provides more than just a functional replacement. Active play is essential for children’s physical and cognitive development, helping build strength, coordination, and confidence. The play tower offers a fun challenge that fosters resilience and problem-solving, while encouraging children to engage creatively with their surroundings - skills that will serve them throughout life.

Upper Hutt City Council notes “investing in Timberlea Park ensures that it continues to be a vital hub for families and visitors. By replacing the old gauntlet with the play tower, we’re supporting the park’s role as a safe, vibrant, and welcoming place for people of all ages. Well-maintained parks foster a sense of community and belonging, making them essential spaces for connection and recreation.”

The structure will be installed by Playground Centre along with a top up of loose fill by local contractors.

The estimated project delivery and installation is planned for May 2025.
