New glass suspension bridge crosses Chinese canyon
The first transparent suspension bridge in China has opened above a canyon in Hunan's Shiniuzhai National Geological Park, offering brave visitors the chance to cross a 180 metre deep chasm with just glass beneath their feet.
At 300 metres long, the newly opened Haohan Bridge - better known as the ‘Brave Men’s Bridge’ - is the longest glass-bottom bridge in the world.
Originally designed to be a wooden bridge developers opted for a transparent glass floor 24mm thick and 25 times stronger than glass used in home windows. The glass is fitted within a steel frame.
The transparent floored structure is one of a growing number of similar attractions around the world, including the Grand Canyon Skywalk and the Eureka Skydeck in Melbourne.
Plans for an even grander glass bridge are currently underway, with Israeli architect’s 380 metre long Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge – the world’s highest and longest glass bridge – also coming to China.
A transparent cliffside walkway around Yuntai Mountain in Henan Province also opened last month.
