New awards to recognise innovation in sport, recreation and play

New awards to recognise innovation in sport, recreation and play
February 16, 2016

The upcoming National Sports Convention is to feature a new award initiative to recognise individuals, not for profits and businesses in the play, recreation and sport sectors for innovations that get more people active.

The National Sports Convention (NSC) 2016 has engaged more than a dozen collaborators and over 60 organisations who are coming together to encourage the industry to be more innovative in the way it plans, funds, and provides physical activity opportunities.

The Sport, Play and Recreation Industry Innovation Awards link with the Convention organisers’ belief that to grow sports participation as an industry there is a need to change not only the way Australia looks at sport, but how to develop and deliver programs to activate people, through a more innovative approach.

Martin Sheppard, Managing Director of NSC backer Smart Connection Consultancy explains “as an industry sector, we all acknowledge that we need to encourage more people to be active and provide them with opportunities to play, recreate, keep fit, and participate at all levels.

“Over the past few years we have seen the growth of new programs, events and more accessible facilities but little growth in formal participation numbers in physical activity in Australia.

“The Convention organisers believe that to grow sport participation as an industry we need to change not only the way we look at sport, but how we develop and deliver programs to activate people, through a more innovative approach.”

NSC 2016 will have an underlining theme around innovation and wants to both encourage the industry to reflect on how we can promote innovation and celebrating what’s already been successful, by recognising Innovation in the following categories:

1. Programs, Activities or Events - that have been developed to encourage the community to be more active in large numbers;
2. Sports Turf - innovative solutions that encourage greater intensity and durability of natural or synthetic sports fields in a manner that allows for greater usage;
3. Technological Solutions and Products - for the Business to Business or the Business to Consumer markets that encourage more people to play sport or be active;
4. Play Grounds - Designs and developments that encourage more children to play, have fun and be active;
5. Young Innovator - a young person (under 25) who has developed a program, space, activity, technological solution or innovative partnership that is encouraging more people to be active;
6. Marketing and Communications - the packaging and communication of an opportunity in a manner that has encouraged more people to be active;
7. Facility Design and Development - Innovative design and management that creates and environment where more people are active ,(built and natural environments); and
8. The Overall Sport, Recreation and Play Industry Award for Innovation - This Award, sponsored by one of the globes leading sports surface innovators, FieldTurf Tarquet, will provide the prize and trophy for the inaugural National Sports Convention Sport, Play and Recreation Innovations Award.

The winner will be chosen from one the above seven winners.

Each category will be independently assessed by a panel in industry experts.

National Sports Convention Innovation Expo
As part of the National Sports Convention Expo the final three short listed applicants will all be provided with an opportunity to display their innovation as part of the industry Expo so that the rest of the industry can appreciate their innovations.

The awards will be presented on the Night of the 23rd June at the Innovations Award and Networking Event in the National Sports Convention Expo area. Trophies and cash prizes are to be provided to all winners and a $5,000 prize for the overall winner.

Applications can be downloaded from the National Sports Convention website from 1st March.

The National Sports Convention is being held at Sydney's Rosehill Racecourse on 23rd and 24th June.
