New $20 million lifestyle and wellness facility opens in Canberra

New $20 million lifestyle and wellness facility opens in Canberra
March 5, 2018

Featuring Australia’s largest Anytime Fitness facility, a 17-metre indoor learn-to-swim pool, a 90 place Kids Club childcare centre and related wellness facilities, the Stellar Canberra club has been officially opened.

An expansion of the Canberra Southern Cross Club in the suburb of Phillip, the new five-storey lifestyle and allied health building was constructed on part of the old Southern Cross Pitch and Putt Club which was closed in 2013.

The first floor houses Anytime Fitness; the second the Southern Cross Health Club and the third floor is home to the club's Unfolding Light Studio which offers yoga, Pilates, tai chi and mediation along with allied health professionals including Active Recovery physiotherapy, the Health Eating Hub dietician centre which also advised the cafe on its menu, and Capital Rehab Professionals, exercise physiologists.

Floating Above, which offers flotation tanks and massage, is scheduled to open on 19th March while tenants are still being sold for the fourth floor.

The attached Kids Club is a separate business, a 90-place childcare centre and drop-in creche for gym members.

Southern Cross Club Chief Innovation Officer Simon Plummer said the gym had 4000 members which had been switched over from the old building in Irving Street.

He told local media “it's great to be open ... we worked late last night to get all the gym equipment across."

The Canberra Southern Cross Club has a long history of being involved in the health sector through its Southern Cross Health Club, and four Anytime Fitness franchises throughout Canberra.

Club Chief Executive Ian Mackay “we recognise the need for an increased focus on health and wellbeing in Canberra. We have built the centre as part of our vision to create a healthier community.”

The building was opened to the public last Thursday having been officially opened on Wednesday by Canberra Southern Cross Club President Chris Behrens, local MP Caroline Le Couteur and Canberra athlete and businessman Robert de Castella.
