read moreChristchurch City Council has appointed Naylor Love Canterbury to build Hornby’s new library, customer services, recreation and sport centre designed by architectural firm, Warren and Mahoney.
A range of community and recreational spaces will be accommodated within the 3600 square metre centre, including a library, creative activities room, a lane pool, a learn-to-swim pool, a toddlers’ wet play area, a spa pool and a customer services zone. An espresso bar and multi-purpose rooms that community groups can use for meetings are also included.
As the Kyle Park site’s earthworks have now been completed, construction of the new centre can begin with Naylor Love Canterbury – a construction company based in Christchurch able to procure material immediately.
The pile steel already ordered by the Council will arrive in late October allowing construction on site to begin.
Christchurch City Council Head of Recreation, Sports and Events Nigel Cox advised “The earth works contractor, HEB Construction, has done a good job preparing the Kyle Park site for the build, which means that Naylor Love Canterbury can hit the ground running and have the facility ready to open at the beginning of 2023.
“Naylor Love Canterbury have a great track record with similar projects in recent years, such as the EA Networks Centre in Ashburton and the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston, and high-profile projects that people in Christchurch will recognise like the Ballantynes redevelopment and the Spark Square building.
“Architects Warren and Mahoney have come up with a great design for the centre so it will be exciting to see their vision come to life. I am sure many in the community will watch progress on the building with great interest.
“The south-west of Christchurch is growing at a rapid rate and is particularly popular with families so there is a real need for new community and sport and recreation facilities in this area. The new Hornby centre will bring these facilities together under one roof and will be a fantastic asset for the community.”
