‘Special forces’ fitness looks to offer more than boot camps

Going beyond the programmes offered by established 'boot camp' operators, the recently opened SpecForce Fitness in Auckland's Eden Terrace offers "a new level of training quality that has not been experienced before in New Zealand."

The brainchild of former New Zealand Army physical trainer Scott Cottier, SpecForce has, according to Cottier, "been developed for those who want to step up from conventional fitness regimes and become part of a unique and highly motivated group of individuals."

Over the past decade Scott has become an admired and sought after trainer for top athletes having trained the Black Sox (the New Zealand men's national softball team), the NZ Residents (rugby league), Junior Kiwis (rugby league), and New Zealand Secondary Schools Rugby League Teams and played a pivotal role in developing Strike Force Gym's 2009 National title champions.

Equipped with this experience, Cottier opened SpecForce on 1st September, aiming to offer a training environment "as close as it gets" to military physical fitness and battle conditioning.

SpecForce's 12 branded programmes will, according to Cottier "push members to their limits every session as well as building teamwork skills. No circuit is ever the same and the exercises are mostly focussed on body weight resistance rather than using machines, with an emphasis on core muscle strength."

SpecForce Fitness's gym facilities operate in two huge open plan rooms providing lots of space and flexibility. The facility incorporates $110,000 worth of Cybex equipment (including Arc trainers, treadmills, bravo functional trainers, power cages and cable crossover machines) to create, what Cottier describes as "a concept and environment unlike any other gym in Australasia ï¾ other than Government led institutes for high performance athletes."

Cottier concludes "forget the posers and the spandex, when people work out at SpecForce the focus is on fitness and self discipline to go that little bit further than before."

SpecForce programs:

Anyone can attend this session as it is designed to build a basic fitness. With an emphasis on enjoyment but with the added encouragement, you will be leaving this session wanting more. Low to medium intensity.

To attend this session you have to attend at least 10 sessions of Force Basic to build that aerobic base. Once you're happy to give it a go, then attend the monthly fitness test to reach the desired level to start training with this increase of intensity. This is designed for those that enjoy their fitness but don't want to be pushed to hard. Mid to high intensity.

Attend 15 or more sessions to trial for this elite and extremely tough class. Once again reaching the desired target on the fitness test, will see you join a band of highly competitive and fit individuals. There is a huge benefit to be part of this group with weekend activities and events to attend, while having the pride to wear the sort after Force Elite apparel. It is one big family of similar people keen to be pushed to an entire new level. This number is limited, so commit early to get your place now. High to extreme intensity.

If you are currently in the Armed Services, want to be or just would like to see how they train, then this session is for you. Designed around self motivation this is a great chance to build the relative strength and fitness base you require to remain active within your employment. If you're looking to join, then training alongside the real deal is a great way to see what you need to reach that ultimate goal. Mid to high Intensity.

Do you feel nervous training alongside males, don't have the confidence to train in large populated gyms, want to build friendships with other women of similar endeavours? Then this session is for you. Conducted during the day, there is plenty of space to excel and let all your inhibitions go and train the way you have always wanted to without the fitness freaks looking at you funny. Low to medium intensity.

Ever feel guilty sitting at your desk all day, or just need to get out of the house? Then this is a session for you. Only 30 minutes long, it caters for all types of fitness levels where you can arrive, get changed, work up a sweat, have a shower and back at work or home within the hour and be wrapped you have achieved something amazing for the day.

For all those over 35s (the new 50s) keen to change that lifestyle to one of health, energetic and enjoyment. Meet new people, come and have fun whilst still building a fitness level you thought you never had. Low intensity training, this could be the start to a healthier lifestyle you have been looking for.

So your children need fitness for an upcoming event? They eat poorly and need outside assistance? They need some motivation to understand that fitness isn't just on an XBOX? They need some discipline and a new found interest to make them better kids? Then this session is for them. Drop your kids off, have a coffee whilst you wait or utilise the cardio or weight machines on offer. Qualified Military Physical Trainers have plenty of experience to get the best out of your child no matter their ability. A tough approach doesn't always work, but with the skills to make the child accountable, they will love you for it. Plenty of education and homework for these kids. Low to medium intensity for ages between 12-16.

Ever wanted to learn to defend yourself? Want to feel more confident within yourself in any situation? Then this is the class for you. Highly qualified and professional instructors from the real CQB school of hard knocks. This caters for anybody, no matter the gender, who are keen to learn the basic skills of defending yourself. Low to high intensity.

Enjoy running? Want to learn the periodised way to train correctly for half, full marathons and triathlons? Want to keep and maintain this type of fitness for general fitness? Then this is for you. Plenty of knowledge passed on here from highly qualified instructors who will be there with you the entire time. Caters for all types of fitness levels. Low to high intensity.

Keen on learning a new way of fitness, or maintaining that skill? This session is designed not only on boxing, but the foundation around it to make you quick, fit and confident in your own ability. This is not the average boxing classes seen at other gyms, there is a real sense of achievement and unique way of training that has you wanting more. Mid to high intensity.

Conducted on Saturday and Sunday mornings, this is catered for anybody where everyone can be involved. An emphasis on competition, this is an enjoyable weekend session to make you feel great and energetic for the lazy day ahead. Bring the entire clan for a family day out, shower here then go to town? Low to high Intensity.
