Motorsports facilities to boost Goulburn economy

Motorsports facilities to boost Goulburn economy
December 27, 2017

Established, well utilised motorsports facilities such as Wakefield Park, Goulburn Speedway and Marulan Driver Training create a competitive advantage for Goulburn, a motorsports industry discussion paper has uncovered.

Released in the lead up to Christmas, the discussion paper had been commissioned following the Goulburn Mulwaree Employment Land Strategy (ELS), which recently won the 2017 Local Government NSW Planning award for Culture Change Innovation and Excellence.

The ELS identified motorsports as a potential growth sector for the region.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council will now seek to establish an industry reference group, to consider how best to maximise the opportunities presented by these established facilities, as well as the track and complex that will be built soon by the Goulburn Motorcycle Club.

Goulburn Mulwaree Mayor Bob Kirk said the Motorsport industry is already one that brings significant economic benefit to the town, and one Council will now seek to develop, commenting “one of the findings of this report suggests we minimise barriers to motorsport industry operation and expansion, and I am strongly in favour of this.

“Our marketing team is already shifting focus to ensure motorsport facilities and events are highlighted, and Council will now look to facilitate establishment of a motorsports industry consultation group who can prioritise actions proposed in the research paper.”

The strategy also highlights that the presence of locally-based Legend Cars Australia and the NSW Police Driver Training Centre, as well as events like the Hot Rod Shakedown, as motorsports related organisations and events that can be leveraged by the city.

The Council now plans to establish an action plan with relevant industry participants and work to identify potential funding opportunities for facilities in the region.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council will also support organisations to prepare baseline information, such as business cases, with the goal of future significant grant applications.
