Minister praises WA aquatic centres for reduced water use
Western Australian aquatic centres have been praised by State Water Minister Bill Marmion following the industry having reduced its water use by almost 10% in the last year.
Acknowledging the support of Leisure Institute of WA Aquatics (LIWA) and the Western Australian Water Corporation, Minister Marmion stated "such significant reductions by an industry where water is a key part demonstrates how we can all do our bit to save our precious resource."
Minister Marmion was speaking at Inglewood's Terry Tyzack Aquatic Centre which has reduced its water use by 50% over the past five years, explaining that the Water Corporation and LIWA had formed a strong partnership to identify ways to minimise scheme water use in aquatic centres across the State.
Minister Marmion added "LIWA is engaging effectively with its 102 members and, as a result, the industry has collectively reduced its water use by more than 96 million litres a year since 2010.
"This has saved the equivalent of 42 Olympic-sized swimming pools of water and about $250,000 for the industry.
"In metropolitan aquatic centres, water efficient taps and showerheads have been installed in change rooms; and in regional areas, changes to irrigation schedules annually save millions of litres of water."
Minister Marmion said the Corporation's current 'Target 60' water saving campaign, which aimed to reduce summer water use by 60 litres per person per day, or about 10%, had started well, adding "so far the Perth community has saved about 2.9 billion litres of water. Last year we exceeded the 10 per cent target, and I encourage everyone to keep those habits going and Target 60 again this summer.
"The campaign began in early December and 1,770 people have already pledged their support by completing an online action plan."
Aquatic centres in Western Australia which use more than 20,000 kilolitres of water per annum must produce a Water Efficiency Management Plan
